SUMMARY:Science on Screen®: Into the Storm The Real Science Behind "Twisters"
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJoin us to celebrate the National Evening of Science on Screen!\nBefore the screening of Twisters (2024)\, Dr. Brian Argrow\, University of Colorado Boulder professor and lead developer of the RAAVEN drone featured in the film\, takes us inside the evolving world of storm chasing. From cutting-edge drone technology to the real risks and rewards of field research\, Dr. Argrow will explore how scientists track severe weather today and how Hollywood’s portrayal stacks up against reality. \nLecture 6:00 PM; Film Screening 7:00 PM \nThis event is FREE for Dairy Arts Center Members as part of the Science on Screen® series \n\nAbout Dr. Brian Argrow\nBrian Argrow (PhD 1989 Aerospace Engineering\, University of Oklahoma) is Professor of Aerospace Engineering Sciences\, founding RECUV director (emeritus)\, and former Associate Dean for Education for the College of Engineering and Applied Science. His current research includes small UAS airframe design and sensor integration\, and integration into the National Airspace System\, with other research including aero/gas dynamics\, and engineering education. His teaching awards include the W.M. Keck Foundation Award for Excellence in Engineering Education\, and he is a University of Colorado President’s Teaching Scholar (a lifetime appointment) and an inaugural fellow of the CU Center for STEM Learning. Professor Argrow co-chaired the first Symposium\nfor Civilian Applications of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (CAUAS) in 2007 and chaired the 2nd  CAUAS in 2014. He is a fellow of AIAA and  a past chair of the AIAA Unmanned Systems Program Committee. In 2009 he completed four years of service on the USAF Scientific Advisory Board\, and he recently served on the NASA Advisory Council’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Subcommittee. He is currently a member of the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine\, and he serves on the ASTM Committee F38 on UAS\, F38.02 Flight Operations. \nAbout Twisters\nA retired tornado-chaser and meteorologist is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work\nwith a new team and new technologies. SUMMARY:Science on Screen®: From Arrival to Atoms Thinking Quantum
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nFrom the sci-fi world of Arrival to the quantum behavior of atoms\, this interactive discussion with Dr. Heather Lewandowski explores how ideas about information\, uncertainty\, and measurement shape our understanding of the physical universe. \nLecture 6:00 PM; Film Screening 7:00 PM \nThis event is FREE for Dairy Arts Center Members as part of the Science on Screen® series \n\nAbout Dr. Heather Lewandowski\nHeather Lewandowski is a professor of physics and Fellow of JILA at the University of Colorado Boulder. She leads two research programs\, one in experimental molecular physics and the other in physics education research. Her molecular physics research efforts focus on studying interactions and reactions of cold\, chemically important molecules and ions. Her physics education research program studies ways to increase students’ proficiency in experimental scientific practices\, as well as research in quantum science education and workforce development.   She earned her B.S. in physics from Michigan Technological University and her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder. She later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). \n\nAbout Arrival\nTaking place after alien crafts land around the world\, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat.
