DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nScience on Screen®: Fungal Frequencies launches the Dairy Arts Center’s exploration of fungi as creative collaborators through movement film\, and scientific discovery. \nThis evening brings together artists\, scientists\, and short film to explore how fungi inspire new forms of artistic expression and ways of seeing. Interdisciplinary artist Iván Daniel Espinosa and mycologists Dr. Alisha Quandt and Mary Childress will offer accessible scientific insight into fungal ecology\, evolution\, and behavior — and preview of the immersive world of MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi\, opening later this month. \nThe evening concludes with a curated selection of short films from the 2025 Fungi Film Festival\, showcasing how filmmakers around the world are translating fungi into poetic\, playful\, and provocative cinematic forms. \nScientific Lecture & Artist Talk: 6:30 PM; Film Screening: 7:30 PM \nThis event is FREE for Dairy Arts Center Members as part of the Science on Screen® series \n \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nIVÁN-DANIEL ESPINOSA\nIván Daniel Espinosa is a choreographer that creates artwork engaged with mycology\, mycelium fungi networks\, avant-garde dance\, climate change and interspecies performance. His recent multimedia art installations integrating mushroom colonies of diverse species with Japanese Butoh dance\, fungal bioacoustics and bio-sonification have been presented at numerous venues such as La Mama Experimental Theatre in NYC\, Seattle International Butoh Festival\, and Roman Susan Art Foundation in Chicago. Iván-Daniel’s performances involving fungi and mushrooms are highlighted in a chapter-length discussion of his work that was published in a 2024 Routledge monograph titled Choreographing Dirt: Movement\, Performance\, and Ecology in the Anthropocene. Iván-Daniel is a PhD Candidate in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Colorado-Boulder. \nOn January 23-25\, 2026\, Iván-Daniel is premiering a new fungi-themed performance at The Dairy Arts Center titled MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi through The Dairy Arts Center’s Co-Production Program. \n  \n \nALISHA QUANDT\, PhD\nDr. Alisha Quandt is a mycologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado-Boulder. She holds a Ph.D. from the Botany and Plant Pathology Department at Oregon State University. Dr. Quandt’s lab at CU-Boulder studies fungal evolutionary biology — especially the evolution of fungal host and ecological transitions\, fungal diversity and how fungi interact with other microorganisms. In 2024\, Dr. Quandt was awarded the Constantine J. Alexopoulos Prize for outstanding early career mycologist by the Mycological Society of America and the Young Mycologist Award for North America by the International Mycological Association. \n  \n  \nMARY CHILRDESS \nMary Childress is a fourth-year PhD candidate in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado Boulder\, working in the Quandt Mycology Lab. Her research interests center on fungal diversity\, systematics\, and plant pathology. She has described three new species of Pseudogymnoascus from Antarctic soils and is currently studying fungal pathogens of Andean endemic trees for her dissertation. \n  \n \nFILM PROGRAM \nAwake: The Dark Night of the Soul (José Antonio Márquez Arroyo Venezuela\, 7:00) \nBumps on Sticks (Riitta Ikonen\, Ben Kinsley\, USA\, 3:56) \nCaverns and Coprophilia (Hamilton Pevec\, USA\, 7:32) \nDo I Know You\, Mushroom? SUMMARY:Obex | Jan 16
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJan 16 \nIn pre-internet 1987\, Conor and his dog Sandy live a life of seclusion\, lost in the slow-rendering graphics of early Macs and televisions aglow with late night horror movie marathons. But when he begins playing OBEX\, a new and mysterious\, state-of-the-art computer game\, he finds himself trapped in a low-tech\, but high-stakes analog hellscape as the line between reality and game blurs. Audacious and uncanny\, writer-director Albert Birney’s OBEX is a delightfully skewed lo-fi fantasy. Shot in striking black and white\, this surreally nostalgic nightmare revisits the dawn of personal computing to reflect on the loneliness of our always-online present day. SUMMARY:The Little Things That Run the World | Jan 21-25
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJan 21-25 \nInsects were the first animals to evolve flight nearly 440 million years ago\, and they survived all five of the known mass extinctions since then. They have also been called the “glue of life” on Earth; they literally hold ecosystems together. But\, there is evidence that the pace of decline among insects in parts of the world today is fast approaching the levels of previous catastrophes. \nWhat does this mean for the rest of life on Earth\, including humans? What is causing this extinction crisis? What can be done to reverse the trend? Our new release The Little Things That Run the World introduces viewers to a diverse group of scientists\, nature lovers\, gardeners\, farmers\, and general bug enthusiasts in exploring the importance of flying insects amid rapid declines in their numbers. The film documents the mysteries of the declines alongside creative and heroic human efforts to change the course of evolutionary history. (Doug Hawes-Davis\, 2025\, USA\, 1:45\, NR)

SUMMARY:For The Living
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nFor centuries\, Humankind has grappled with the tension between the two extremes of our nature: Dehumanization and Empathy. Darkness and Light. From the genocide of Indigenous peoples of the western hemisphere to the horrors of the Holocaust to the genocides in Bosnia and Rwanda we realize that numbers make us numb. The more who die\, the less we care. But\, in 2019 another journey from darkness to light called “Ride for the Living” offered a way forward. Originating at the universal symbol of absolute evil (Auschwitz-Birkenau) 250 cyclists from 12 different countries came together to re-trace the WWII liberation path of a single 10-year Holocaust survivor across the Polish countryside to reach a destination symbolizing our common humanity: Krakow\, Poland. \nAlternating between the intimate story of this one Holocaust survivor and the startling similarities among individuals in all genocides\, these parallel journeys bring to life how we can grow our empathy to encompass millions. And how the American educational system has long overlooked—and in 2025 now threatens to whitewash–these stories and the insights we need to prevent future genocides. Inciting the urgent conversation: When will we stop building monuments for the Dead and get busy re-humanizing the Living? When will we finally say NEVER AGAIN and truly mean it? SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival: The Road To Patagonia
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n\n\n\nThe Road to Patagonia is a stunning\, intimate and unflinching series of love letters within a documentary – firstly a love between two people\, and secondly between humanity and the Earth. We follow Matty Hannon on an incredible solo adventure\, to surf the west coast of the Americas by motorbike\, from the top of Alaska to the tip of Patagonia. But deep in the wilderness – alone with the wolves and the bears – the journeyer’s plans unexpectedly fall to pieces. After losing everything\, and on the cusp of quitting he meets the girl of his dreams\, a permaculture farmer named Heather Hillier who throws caution to the wind and sells her urban-farm to buy a bike of her own. Together riding south\, the duo meet with Zapatista rebels\, Amazonian shamans and Mapuche leaders whose salient words crack the adventurers’ cultural veneer\, leaving them with existential questions. \nThe 50\,000km surfing odyssey becomes beautifully complicated by their decision to downshift from motorcycles to horseback\, presenting a relational approach to the breathtaking landscapes and a host of challenges that ultimately become extremely rewarding. Hannon and Hillier succeed in beautifully capturing deeply human moments during the world-first expedition\, and the noticeable lack of camera-crew becomes The Road to Patagonia’s strength. The theme of deep ecology underpins the entire film\, visually communicated through exquisite cinematography and emotional verité sequences. Shot over 16 years\, the result is an adventurous exposé on the more-than-human world\, offering a physical and spiritual odyssey to better understand our place in Nature. \nWinner – Best Film and Best Documentary – Byron Bay International Film Festival \nWinner – Audience Choice Award – Florida Surf Film Festival \nWinner – Audience Choice Award – Melbourne Documentary Film Festival \nWinner – Jury Award – Honolulu Surf Film Festival \nYear: 2024 \nFilmmaker: Matty Hannon \nRuntime: 90 minutes \nPRODUCTION \n10 years \nWORLD PREMIERE \nByron Bay International F.F. \n\npresented by the Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival AND DAIRY ARTS CENTER.

SUMMARY:The Chronology of Water | Feb 4-8
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nBased on the beloved memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch and marking the directorial debut of Kristen Stewart\, The Chronology of Water is a raw and unflinching portrait of survival\, sexuality\, and self-invention. The film traces Lidia’s life from her earliest memories in the Pacific Northwest\, as a promising swimmer\, through fractured relationships\, near-motherhood\, addiction\, and encounters with artistic heroes. Told as a fluid memory wash\, the story transforms trauma into art\, embodying Yuknavitch’s defiant voice that made her work a modern cult classic. It is not only a chronicle of a woman becoming a writer\, but a visceral journey through the wreckage and resilience of a life lived against the grain. SUMMARY:Ain't No Back to a Merry-Go-Round | Feb 4-7
DESCRIPTION:TICKETSThis is the untold story of the first organized interracial civil rights protest in U.S. history. When 5 Howard University students sat on a Maryland carousel in 1960\, the arrests made headlines. When the white community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing\, an extraordinary history-making partnership was born. The pickets attracted Nazis\, Congressman\, and a press avalanche. Picketing together over the sweltering summer led to partying together\, and union organizers mentored student activists. Ten 1961 Freedom Riders\, including Stokely Carmichael\, were incubated on the Glen Echo picket line\, and the carousel arrests were challenged in the Supreme Court case.  With never-before seen footage\, and immersive storytelling\, four living protesters rescue this forgotten history\, revealing the price\, and the power\, of heeding the impulse to activism. SUMMARY:Science on Screen® You Can't Miss What You Forget | Feb 8
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nScience on Screen® You Can’t Miss What You Forget \nDigital Memory and the Trouble with Letting Go \nWhat happens when we try to move on\, but our data won’t let us? \nFollowing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind\, Dr. Anthony T. Pinter explores how our online “data shadows” preserve relationships\, identities\, and memories long after they’ve ended. \nAs our lives change\, the data that represents us often doesn’t\, leaving behind digital versions of ourselves that no longer fit who we are now. The potential for incongruence between us and our online “data shadows” can be problematic during life transitions\, or moments where our identities change significantly (e.g.\, coming out\, dying\, becoming a parent\, amongst others). We may move on\, but our data shadows follow; resurfacing data to make recommendations and encouraging us to reminisce. \nMuch like sorting through the physical objects of sentimental value\, our data must also be considered in the aftermath of life transitions; some want to delete everything\, others prefer to keep and revisit it. Drawing from research on romantic breakups and digital identity\, this talk looks at how people decide what to do with the data left behind after a relationship ends. From the framework of two curatorial philosophies – the archivist and revisionist – Dr. Pinter will discuss how people make decisions about what to do with their data\, how they enact those decisions\, and how to contend with the algorithmic curator. \nBlending themes of memory\, loss\, and control\, this Science on Screen conversation asks a deceptively simple question: in a world where forgetting isn’t entirely up to us\, what does it really mean to let go? \nIntroduction & film screening: 1:00 PM; Scientific Lecture 3:00 PM \nThis event is FREE for Dairy Arts Center Members as part of the Science on Screen® series \n  \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nDR. ANTHONY T. PINTER is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Creative Technology & Design in the ATLAS Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder. He holds a BS and MS in Information Sciences and Technology from the Pennsylvania State University\, and an MS and PhD in Information Science from the University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Pinter’s scholarship focuses on the experiences people have during life transitions and how those experiences are translated into data and online identities. He is specifically interested in how people make decisions about what to do with the data left behind after a romantic relationship ends\, how those decisions contribute to the formation of post-break-up identities\, and how to design systems to support that decision-making. SUMMARY:Natchez | Feb 11-15
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nNATCHEZ captures an unsettling clash between history and memory in a small Mississippi town; a layered mosaic of people contending with the weight of the past in a place where it is always present. Equal parts amusing and disturbing\, we journey through an antebellum tourist destination at a crossroads as it grapples with a deeply troubled history that is so thoroughly ingrained in its present\, we’re left to wonder if it’s actually past at all. SUMMARY:Friday Night Weird: King Baby
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nFeb 13 \nThis subversive-absurdist comedy\, which recently had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam\, is set in a warped modern fairytale ‘kingdom’ populated only by a King and a Servant (Graham Dickson and Neil Chinneck). But when a Queen mannequin arrives one day\, their carefully constructed lives are thrown into disarray\, madness\, and murderous megalomania. Combing the painful and playful\, filmmaker duo Kit and Arran present keen insights into the nuances of patriarchal brutality. (Kit Redstone & Arran Shearing\, 2025\, UK\, 1:28\, treat as R) \n\n
