SUMMARY:Porcelain War
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJuly 15-17* \nAmidst the chaos and destruction of the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine\, three artists defiantly find inspiration and beauty as they defend their culture and their country. In a war waged by professional soldiers against ordinary civilians\, Slava Leontyev\, Anya Stasenko\, and Andrey Stefanov choose to stay behind\, armed with their art\, their cameras\, and\, for the first time in their lives\, their guns. Despite daily shelling\, Anya finds resistance and purpose in her art\, Andrey takes the dangerous journey to get his young family to safety abroad\, and Slava becomes a weapons instructor for ordinary people who have become unlikely soldiers. As the war intensifies\, Andrey picks up his camera to film their story\, and on tiny porcelain figurines\, Anya and Slava capture their idyllic past\, uncertain present\, and hope for the future. (Brendan Bellomo & Slava Leontyev\, 2024\, USA/Ukraine\, 1:27\, R) \n*July 16\, 7 PM screening will be followed by a post film conversation with Academy Award winning film producer\, Paula DuPré Pesmen!

SUMMARY:Classics with Jeffrey Kash: The Facts of Life
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJuly 14\nUnlike the typical Bob Hope and Lucille Ball vehicles\, The Facts of Life is essentially a domestic drama with comic undertones. Hope is married to Ruth Hussey\, while Ball is the wife of Don DeFore. All four are old friends\, who for many years have taken each other for granted. A series of unforeseen circumstances requires Hope and Ball to spend a great deal of time together without their spouses\, and as a result they fall in love. Though the affair is never consummated\, Hope and Ball are prepared to run off together\, but in the end they decide that adultery at their age just isn’t worth the trouble. Long unavailable for viewing due to legal tangles\, The Facts of Life has gained legendary status as one of the few Bob Hope films of the 1960s to concentrate on character development rather than silly one-liners. Recent viewings have revealed that\, though a far more mature work than one might expect from Hope or Ball\, Facts of Life still relies to a great extent on the sort of TV sitcom material that the fans of the two stars had come to expect by 1960. Still\, the film was considered offbeat enough to warrant an Oscar nomination for best screenplay (Melvin Frank\,  1961\, USA\, 1:43\, NR)

SUMMARY:Sabbath Queen
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJuly 9-13 \nCo-presented by the Boulder Jewish Community Center \nShot over 21 years\, it follows Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie’s epic journey as the dynastic heir of 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis including the Chief Rabbis of Israel. He is torn between accepting his ancestral destiny or following his heart to become a drag queen rebel\, a queer father\, and the founder of Lab/Shul – an everybody-friendly\, experimental congregation. As SABBATH QUEEN opens\, Lau-Lavie is newly arrived in New York in the late 1990s\, a young gay man declaring “Artists are the new rabbis” and appearing around the city in drag as Rebbetzin Hadassah Gross\, the widow of six Hasidic rabbis (all from the same extended family). As the years pass\, Lau-Lavie embraces a range of creative spiritual endeavors including Storahtelling and Lab/Shul – until he shocks everyone with his decision to become a rabbi himself\, studying in the Conservative tradition of Judaism. Director Sandi Dubowski will be present for Q&A at the first two screenings. (Sandi Simcha Dubowski\, 2025\, USA\, 1:45\, NR)

SUMMARY:When Fall Is Coming
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJuly 2-6 \nAfter a tumultuous life in Paris\, Michelle (Hélène Vincent) has retired to a quiet existence in Burgundy\, tending her garden and attending services at her parish. The voracious hostility of her adult daughter Valérie (Ludivine Sagnier) remains Michelle’s great puzzlement: how can a child for whom she sacrificed so much treat her with such contempt and suspicion? When Valérie drops off her son for a week with his grandmother\, Michelle sees an opportunity to repair the relationship\, but a culinary accident soon undercuts whatever trust remains. With the help of her best friend Marie Claude (Josiane Balasko)\, whose son (Pierre Lottin) has recently been released from prison\, Michelle plots a path towards restoring the family life so long denied her. With a deceptively placid surface\, master stylist François Ozon cooks up a twisty and destabilizing thriller where family ties remain the most mysterious ingredient of all. SUMMARY:Secret Mall Apartment
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJuly 2-6 \nIn 2003\, eight Rhode Island artists created a secret apartment inside the busy Providence Place Mall and lived there for four years\, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture\, tapped into the mall’s electricity\, and even constructed a wall\, smuggling in more than two tons of cinderblock. Far more than just a wild prank\, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for its inhabitants. It was a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification\, a boundary-pushing work of public/private art\, a clubhouse in which large-scale charitable art projects were planned\, and\, finally\, a 750 square-foot “F you” to The Man. Featuring never-before-seen footage of the space and revealing the identities of all the participants for the first time\, SECRET MALL APARTMENT is more than just a bonkers true story. Director Jeremy Workman (Lily Topples The World\, The World Before Your Feet\, Deciding Vote) delivers a poignant exploration of a group of artists who discovered their purpose within the most commercial and improbable places. DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJune 25-29 \nArtist/filmmaker team Dan Edelstyn and Hilary Powell live in an area plagued by debt – mortgage debt\, credit card debt\, public debt – which impoverishes families\, communities and public services. So they recruit their neighbors to set up a bank in their High Street to print their own currency which they then sell as art works. The plan is to raise money to support the local school and community projects and\, more daringly\, to buy up over $1 million of the debts of local people. These debts are being sold on the market for a small fraction of their face value. \nBANK JOB follows Dan and Hilary as they succeed in their aim\, eventually (and spectacularly) blowing up the debt in the shadow of London’s financial district. Along the way\, they meet with economists\, politicians and anti-debt campaigners in America (including the late anthropologist David Graeber) to discover how debt is created in our economy and ask important questions about how the system of money creation might be altered in society’s favor…not just to the banking system’s benefit. \nWith wit\, insight\, and gunpowder\, BANK JOB argues that these debts are a result of a monetary system which is impoverishing multitudes by design\, and which could be changed. SUMMARY:The Shrouds
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJune 6 \nIn an eerie\, deceptively placid near-future\, a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh (Vincent Cassel) has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth. While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife (Diane Kruger) from cancer—and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger)—a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his “shroud” technology begins to put his enterprise at risk\, leading him to uncover a potentially vast conspiracy. Written following the death of the director’s wife\, the new film from David Cronenberg is both a profoundly personal reckoning with grief and a descent into noir-tinged dystopia\, set in an ominous world of self-driving cars\, data theft\, and A.I. personal assistants. Offering Cronenberg’s customary balance of malevolence and wit\, The Shrouds is a sly and thought-provoking consideration of the corporeal and the digital\, the mortal and the infinite.
