SUMMARY:Daughtering
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nIn “Daughtering\,” three generations of women navigate living\, dying and the dead when they are called home to appease unruly spirits. Sixteen to seventy-something\, each carries her own idea of what it means to be a daughter: caregiver\, rebel\, keeper of the stories\, breaker of the cycle. Over the course of three charged days and nights\, the daughters navigate relationship\, grief\, and the business of the old house that contains them\, alive in its own way with memory and an impressive population of mice. What unfolds is a darkly humorous\, emotionally resonant exploration of identity\, inheritance and the universal work of becoming who we are\, despite (and because of) where we come from. The play culminates in DIY ceremony and catharsis – as tender\, fierce and complicated as daughtering itself.

SUMMARY:The Catamounts present Burning Bluebeard by Jay Torrence | JAN. 31 - FEB. 21
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nBlending comedy\, vaudeville\, clowning\, and meta-theatrical play\, BURNING BLUEBEARD reimagines the 1903 Chicago Iroquois Theatre fire from the perspective of the performers. The piece is both a reckoning and a love letter—an exploration of why we gather\, what we risk in live performance\, and how theater holds us together in moments of joy and catastrophe. \nOf the original Chicago production\, Newcity Stage wrote: \nBURNING BLUEBEARD represents the cumulative potential of theater as an art form: a poetic\, terrifying\, gut-buster tour de force that tells the audience exactly what this show is going to be—a deconstructed retelling of the 1903 Iroquois Theatre Fire from the eyes of the artists who worked on “Mr. Bluebeard\,” the production that sent the theater up in flames—even while building the sense that this time fate may be averted\, we might see the second act\, and the victims of that fire could be saved. \nDirected by Artistic Director Amanda Berg Wilson\, The Catamounts bring their signature immersive approach to the work\, transforming the Carsen Theater into a shared environment where audience and performers exist together inside the story. The result is a theatrical experience that is playful\, unsettling\, and deeply communal—inviting us to imagine what it means to care for one another in the dark. \nSunday performances on February 1\, 14\, and 21 will be followed by a community gathering. Tickets include food and drink\, with options available for those with and without dietary restrictions. \nTo donate to The Catamounts please visit https://www.coloradogives.org/organization/TheCatamounts

SUMMARY:MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi | Jan. 23-25
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nMycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi is a multimedia stage performance directed by choreographer Iván-Daniel Espinosa. Inspired by the underground networks of mycelium that connect the roots of thousands of plants and trees\, this performance incorporates mycology and sculpture with live electroacoustic soundscapes and Japanese Butoh dance to bring to life the fascinating world of fungi in an immersive theatrical setting. For this performance\, Espinosa and his collaborators have designed a maze-like sculpture incorporating fungal colonies with fruiting mushrooms of different species. Musical soundscapes are created in real time by hooking up the fungi to bio-sensor and bio-sonification devices that convert the mycelium’s electrical and textural activity into Live sounds. The installation is further activated by dancers performing a choreography in the style of Japanese Butoh (舞踏\, Butō) inspired by the vibrant ecosystems of fungi and their shapeshifting movement through space and time. MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi creates a multi-sensory and mind-bending experience that demonstrates a deeply intimate relationship to nature\, where the distinctions between human and non-human worlds dissolve in slow and attentive bodily practice. \nDANCERS:\nStefan Bach\nCorin Wiggins\nKenji Hirose\nArlo Sage King \nLIVE MUSIC composed and performed by Christopher Bryant Arnett.\nSCULPTURE designed by Arlo Sage King. \nABOUT THE DIRECTOR & CHOREOGRAPHER:\nIván-Daniel Espinosa is a Latino dance choreographer that creates interdisciplinary artwork engaged with ecology\, mushrooms and fungi\, climate change\, and interspecies performance. His recent multimedia performances integrating mushroom colonies with live dance\, fungal bioacoustics and fungal bio-sonification have been presented at numerous venues nationwide such as La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York City\, Seattle International Butoh Festival\, Seattle ARTS IN NATURE Festival\, Houston Fringe Festival\, and Roman Susan Art Foundation in Chicago. Iván-Daniel’s performances involving fungi and mushrooms are highlighted in a chapter-length discussion of his artwork that was published in a 2024 Routledge book titled Choreographing Dirt: Movement\, Performance\, and Ecology in the Anthropocene. \nAs a scholar and artist\, Iván-Daniel specializes in Butoh (舞踏\, Butō)\, an avant-garde form of dance-theater that was originated by Tatsumi Hijikata in 1960’s Tokyo. Iván-Daniel began his Butoh training in 2014 and has studied with many renowned Japanese master teachers from the lineage of Hijikata including Natsu Nakajima\, Saga Kobayashi\, Hiroko and Koichi Tamano\, Semimaru and Dai Matsuoka of SANKAI JUKU\, and Moe Yamamoto of Kanazawa Butoh-Kan. Iván-Daniel’s formative training began with Seattle Butoh pioneer Joan Laage\, who continues to serve as his foremost teacher to this day. Iván-Daniel is the co-founder of the Salish Sea Butoh Festival\, an annual dance convergence that takes place on the Olympic Peninsula to deepen the study of Japanese Butoh with artists from all over the world.\nIván-Daniel is a current PhD Candidate in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Colorado-Boulder and he also holds a Master of Arts in Performance Studies from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (NYU). Iván-Daniel’s PhD dissertation research at CU-Boulder examines the intersections of performance and fungal mycology\, focusing on the relationships between human bodies and mycelium fungi networks through the lenses of choreography and dance performance. \n** MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi is funded in part by a Community Project Grant from the Boulder Arts Commission\, an agency of the Boulder City Council. This project is also supported by additional grant funding from the CU-Boulder Office for Public and Community-Engaged Scholarship and the Nature\, Environment\, Science & Technology (NEST) Studio for the Arts. **

The Denver Post – “Shafer can stand solid next to folks like John Prine and Greg Brown — it almost feels like murder to dissect. It’s great music of the people\, by the people\, and for the people. Nuff said.”\nOlivia “Liv” Roumel is an evocative and soulful singer\, songwriter\, guitarist and keys player. Hailing from Ann Arbor Michigan\, but based in Denver since 2016\, her music blends soulful vocals with jazz-inspired textures and nature-infused imagery. A childhood prodigy born with perfect pitch\, Carson composed complete songs at age four and had his music performed by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at age sixteen\, leading him to be called “one of the most gifted rising stars” by the Edmonton Journal. When he attended the New England Conservatory\, however\, his studies with Joe Maneri\, Cecil Taylor\, and the poet Robert Creeley led him to a dramatic life change: he walked away from music and spent two years backpacking and farming overland from Spain to Japan. After his return to Northern Alberta\, Canada\, he then spent five years designing\, building\, and practicing in a remote strawbale cabin. The musical result was multilayered\, detailed\, meditative\, and harmonious. “I wanted to play the whole piano at once\,” says Carson\, “in the same way that a single breeze can cause the entire forest to dance and tremble in unison.” (performing on Sept 20-21 only) \nOur Mission\nThe Blind Cafe inspires positive social change by fostering connection and compassion through darkness-based experiences\, encouraging participants to engage beyond visual conditioning and social norms. \nOur Story\nFounded in 2010 by Rosh\, inspired by a Reykjavik “cafe in the dark\,” The Blind Cafe Experience has evolved into an internationally touring pop-up event. Partnering with blind ambassadors James Jackson and Richie Flores since 2011\, it combines music\, dining\, and dialogue for transformative social impact. \nTestimonials\n“I cried during ‘Transcend’… knowing I was invisible made it easier to feel. Our table held hands and swayed together!” —Katie Maginnis\, Seattle\n“An incredible\, enlightening experience… professional and impactful.” —Brian Johnson\, The Marquee Music Magazine \n#Music #DateNightIdeas #BlindTasting #DiningInTheDark #BoulderEvents #ColoradoEvents
