SUMMARY:BVSD Annual High School Art Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:On View April 2 – May 3 | Opening Reception: April 2 \, 5 – 7 PM \nFor the BVSD Annual High School Art Exhibition\, this year’s theme is “The Third Eye\,” in line with this year’s PEEK fundraiser theme. The prompt was shared with BVSD educators in September\, giving teachers and students an entire academic year to explore the idea in the classroom. The theme has served as a launching point for sustained educational inquiry. The exhibition opens with a public reception and\, in partnership with Boulder Arts Week\, will feature a student-led artist talk for the first time. \nThe Third Eye invites student artists to explore the connections between art\, spirituality\, and the unseen. Centered on the idea that art can be more than representation\, the theme positions creative practice as a portal into liminal spaces\, forgotten rituals\, and deeper ways of knowing. \nAcross art history\, artists have turned to spiritual and mystical traditions as sources of transformation—from Hildegard of Bingen’s illuminated visions and Georgiana Houghton’s trance drawings to the abstract languages of Hilma af Klint and Wassily Kandinsky. In this lineage\, students ask: How does art help us access the unknown? How can ritual\, myth\, or meditation be part of creative practice? What does it mean to “see” beyond the visible?

SUMMARY:Black Futures in Art Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:On View Feb 19 – March 29 | Opening Reception: Feb 20\, 5 – 8 PMFourth Annual Exhibition at the Dairy Arts Center | Curated by Adderly Grant-Lord \nNow in its fourth year at the Dairy Arts Center\, Black Futures in Art is a sweeping\, annual exhibition presented in celebration of Black History Month and in ongoing recognition of Black artistry and excellence year-round. Curated by Adderly Grant-Lord\, the exhibition brings together Black artists from Colorado and across the United States\, highlighting a broad range of practices\, voices\, and visions shaping contemporary art today. \nThis year’s exhibition is grounded in the theme “The excellence beneath our feet lives in our bones\,” a poetic meditation on legacy\, inheritance\, and resilience. The exhibition looks to what has been buried\, erased\, or overlooked in both past and present\, while honoring the enduring knowledge\, creativity\, and excellence that persist across generations. Through visual art\, the exhibition considers how memory\, land\, body\, and ancestry carry stories forward\, and how art becomes a conduit for community\, reflection\, and dialogue around the past\, present\, and future. \nBlack Futures in Art creates space for both celebration and critical engagement\, inviting audiences to witness how artists navigate history\, imagine possibility\, and cultivate collective understanding. The exhibition is accompanied by a robust slate of public programming\, including film screenings\, artist talks\, a lecture series\, hands-on workshops — and a special live musical performance at the Opening Reception. \n\n Opening Reception Musicians\nThe evening will feature a dynamic ensemble of Colorado-based musicians whose practices bridge classical training\, jazz lineage\, and contemporary experimentation: \nJoe Tabano (Trumpet) – A Denver-born and raised trumpet player\, Joe’s roots in jazz are shaped by mentorship connected to the lineage of Ron Miles. Having toured throughout the United States and Europe\, his sound blends traditional jazz sensibility with expansive improvisation and expressive depth. \nLiv Stephfano (Cello) – A Horizon High School student and accomplished young cellist\, Liv was selected for the district-wide Honors Concert and earned 2nd Chair among 15 top performers — a testament to her dedication and musical excellence. \nJosias Gilmore (Electric Guitar) – An accomplished guitarist with several years of performance experience\, Josias has played iconic stages including Red Rocks Amphitheatre\, Fillmore Auditorium\, and Paramount Theatre\, bringing versatility and stage presence to every performance. \nPhillip Cutler (Violin) – A Fort Collins–based violinist with over 13 years of training\, Phillip bridges classical discipline with contemporary exploration. Having participated in Colorado All-State Orchestras and studied under Mark Woods of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra\, his work blends orchestral precision with modern energy\, drawing from classical\, fiddle\, jazz\, and electronic influences. \nTogether\, these musicians create a layered sonic environment that echoes the exhibition’s themes of inheritance\, evolution\, and living legacy.

SUMMARY:Continuum Opening Party
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nCelebrate the opening of the Continuum exhibition with an evening of art\, music\, and connection. Enjoy a live DJ set by Internaleyes\, drinks\, and conversation as you explore a powerful exhibition reflecting on the cycles of life\, death\, aging\, and the enduring threads that connect us all. \nA continuum is a continuous range or series where things blend seamlessly into one another — like the shifting colors of a rainbow\, where no single shade ends and another begins. We often divide life into stages — youth\, adulthood\, old age\, life\, and death — as though separate from nature’s cycles. But everything moves in loops: death nourishes new life\, time is both linear and infinite\, and aging is only the visible surface of a more fluid human experience. \nContinuum explores how art can spark connection\, conversation\, and community around these shared truths — the knowns and unknowns of living\, dying\, and everything in between. The exhibition brings together artists of different generations and disciplines to explore themes of identity\, memory\, selfhood\, the body\, grief\, loss\, family histories\, and spirituality. At its core\, Continuum is about love — love that crosses time\, generations\, and boundaries both real and imagined. \nAbout the Music: Internal Eyes \n\nComing to fruition in the beginning of 2025\, Internal Eyes is a producer\, song-writer\, and DJ based out of Boulder\, CO. He draws inspiration from the surrounding beauty of mountainous terrain\, deep blue skies\, and nature’s inhabitants. Flowing water\, birds\, crickets\, and natural instruments embody the sound of Internal Eyes\, supported by deep low ends and atmospheric melodies. Originally from the East Coast\, Internal Eyes has a foundational background in hip-hop and house music genres\, blending the two with an organic feel to create a sound that captures attention and brings life to textural landscapes.\n\nExhibiting Artists & Spaces \nMcMahon Gallery: Kaori Takamura\, Shapes of Ephemera\nHand Rudy & Caruso Galleries: Kristen Letts Kovak\nPolly Addison Gallery: Lina Pin\nDairy Lobby: Laura Mackie\nMacMillan Gallery: The Continuum Intergenerational Arts Project\nEmbassy Suites Hotel Boulder: Lisa Berley \nFree and open to the public!

SUMMARY:Matter Over Mind Visual Arts Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception for the Matter Over Mind exhibition. Be the first to see the art and a chance to meet the artist. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available for purchase. \nExhibit On View: 11 July – 31 August\, 2025\nArtists: ATLAS Institute’s Emergent Nanomaterials Lab (Joshua Coffie\, Meenakshi Skandarajan\, Caitlin Rogers\, and Alexandra Felderman)\, Ana González Baragan\, Andrea Garcia Vasquez\, Anna Tsouhlarakis\, Belgin Yucelen\, Carson Besser\, Heather Schulte\, Netta Ofer\, Steven Frost\nMatter Over Mind is an exhibition that explores multidisciplinary innovation\, boundary-pushing research\, and the brilliant\, experimental space where art and science collide. Learn how creative practices are redefining our relationship with the physical world — using matter as a tool to rethink\, reimagine\, and reshape how we live\, learn\, and create. \nThe exhibition brings together a vibrant community of radical thinkers and hands-on makers — artists who are also researchers\, inventors\, teachers\, and students. Many of the exhibiting artists are affiliated with the University of Colorado Boulder and its ATLAS Institute\, an interdisciplinary hub for creativity and invention\, where bold ideas come to life through hands-on experimentation\, collaboration\, and critical inquiry. \nFrom the ATLAS Institute’s Emergent Nanomaterials Lab — where Joshua Coffie\, Meenaksi Skandarajan\, Caitlin Rogers\, and Alexandra Felderman develop smart tattoo inks for the human body — to Netta Ofer’s slime mold experiments exploring nonhuman intelligence\, to Ana González Barragán’s transformation of discarded Colorado quarry stone into poetic interventions\, each artist pushes material to its edge and invites us to think differently. \nRather than “mind over matter“\, this exhibition proposes the reverse: Matter Over Mind — a celebration of those who think unconventionally\, experiment boldly\, and let the material world lead the way toward new possibilities. \n

SUMMARY:The Elusive Quest for Salvation: Lecture and Dialogue Mixer with Dr. Danielle Hodge
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nThe Elusive Quest for Salvation\, a culmination of the lectures on love and freedom\, looks to Derrick Bell as a paradigm for creating space ripe for future making. Offering counterstories that question what salvation means\, think through different contours of salvation\, and explore how we may arrive at salvation\, this lecture invites a kind of speculation and imagining that sustains our responsibility to\, as the spiritual says\, ‘see what the end will be.’ \nThis event is part of the Juneteenth Lecture Series with Dr. Danielle Hodge. Each of these lectures invoke African American legal scholar Derrick Bell’s seminal\ncontribution\, And We Are Not Saved: The Elusive Quest for Racial Justice\, by situating love\, freedom\, and salvation as perpetually evasive though necessary in our struggle for liberation. Click here to learn more about the other lectures in the series.\nOrganized by: CU DialoguesCo-Sponsored by: Finance and Business Strategy\, The Center for African and African American Studies\, The College of Media\, Communication\, & Information\, The Department of Communication\, The Center for Teaching and Learning\, The School of Education\, The Dairy Arts Center\, A&S Office for Access & Community Engagement\, and Infrastructure & Resilience Opportunity for Change Committee.

SUMMARY:BENOFF: The Hermit of Treig
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nApr 20 \nA meticulous diarist and avid photographer\, Ken Smith has spent the past four decades in the Scottish Highlands\, living alone in a log cabin nestled near Loch Treig\, known as ‘the lonely loch’. He has no electricity or running water. He lives off the land\, fishing for his supper\, chopping wood\, and even brewing his own tipple. Filmed over 10 years\, director Lizzie Mackenzie poetically captures Ken’s profound\, spiritual relationship with the wilderness: “If you love the land\, it loves you back”. Now in his 70s\, Ken reflects upon the reasons he turned his back on society\, the vulnerability of old age and the awe and wonder of a life lived in nature in this humorous\, transcendent and life affirming feature documentary.
