SUMMARY:Parasol Arts: Carmen\, the Tango | Mar. 26-27
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nParasol Arts presents the famous story of Carmen using the sensual and passionate language of Argentine Tango\, for the first time in Boulder. The performance tells the story of Carmen\, Don José\, and the bullfighter Escamillo. Carmen is a free-spirited gypsy in contrast to the temperamental and fickle Don José. A fight with Don Jose’s fiancé\, Michaela\, leads to Carmen’s arrest by Captain Zúñiga. In jail\, she seduces Don José and convinces him to release her. Carmen is subsequently caught in a love triangle between Don José and popular bullfighter Escamillo. Captain Zuniga and Michaela disapprove of the unconventional behaviour of Carmen and her lovers. Fate\, a representation of Carmen’s alter ego\, tells Carmen’s fortune with a deck of cards. Carmen ignores the warning of her destiny and continues to pursue Escamillo. Don José is obsessed with Carmen and in a jealous moment stabs her. She dies caressing Don José’s face\, revealing him as the assassin. \n“Carmen\, The Tango” created and directed by Lorita Travaglia\, features the talents of Donato Juarez as Don Jose\, Diana Cruz as Carmen\, Marcelo Molina as Escamillo\, Sarah Genung as Michaela\, Facundo Agüero Maisano as Captain Zuniga and Lorita Travaglia as Fate.

The program is now a combination of works from the canceled December program and the previously planned March program. Therefore\, the first half\nof the 3/21 concert includes Mozart’s dancing Divertimento in F Major\, and his heartfelt Piano Concerto K.413\, featuring Mina Gajić as piano soloist. Shorter works that refresh the aural palate include J.S. Bach’s timeless “Arioso\,” and “Norwegian Wood” by Lennon/McCartney—in a totally new version of The Beatles’ much adored classic. \nPROGRAM:\nSalzburg Symphony “Divertimento” in F Major\, K.138—W.A. He led the Centennial Brass Quintet\, and has appeared with Denver Municipal Band\, Boulder Brass\, Colorado Music Festival\, Bob Hope and the Four Tops\, all in addition to a scientific software career at UCAR/NCAR. Dave serves on the CU College of Music Advisory Board and is a Trustee for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra\, in which he played 34 seasons as Principal Trumpet.\nMaisha Diatta: \nPursuing a BFA in dance as a junior at Dean College (in MA)\, Maisha holds competitive awards in many styles—jazz\, modern\, hip-hop and especially tap. Beyond frequent improvisation\, she has created award-winning choreographs for herself and others. Maisha has appeared in Debbie Allen’s Brothers of the Knight\, Chloe Arnold’s #NoFilterSoleTalk\, and the Oscars Academy Concert in LA.\nRobert Johnson: \nRobert has shared the stage with Stevie Wonder\, Roberta Flack\, Lou Rawls\, Blood Sweat and Tears\, Chuck Mangione\, Stan Getz\, Donna Summer\, Robert Cray\, Jeffery Osborne\, Charlie Daniels and Mel Torme. Celebrated for their “primal energy” (Chicago Reader\, March 2025) and hypnotic vocal harmonies\, this quartet blends ethno-ritual performances with feminine resilience for a “dynamic and contemporary” (Minneapolis Star Tribune) experience. \nSince making their North American debut in 2025\, YAGÓDY has continued to evolve their craft\, recently releasing a haunting new single\, “Koni\,” and video from director and cinematographer Olia Klymuk. \nIn this original song inspired by her grandmother\, YAGÓDY founder Zoriana Dybovska sings of “the youth that passes and the love that lives in memories.” The song draws on the image of the willow tree\, a central motif in Ukrainian folklore that acts as an emblem of tenderness\, grief\, and endurance. \nThe three original vocalists of YAGÓDY—Zoriana Dybovska\, Vasylyna Voloshyn\, Tetiana Voitiv\, and accordionist Nadiia Parashchuk—continue their mission to preserve\, reinterpret\, and breathe new life into Ukrainian Ukrainian folk songs and traditions from around the world. YAGÓDY’s repertoire will also include music from their self-titled debut album as well as original singles “Tsunamia\,” which placed in Ukraine’s national Eurovision selection\, and the defiant anthem “BRamaYa.” They will be joined on tour by drummer Teimyraz Gogitidze.
