Boulder County DA Michael Dougherty will sit with the storytellers to co-read their narratives and reflect publicly on their impact. The couple shares a partnership in both music and life as Samir and Aja have been married for over a decade. This moving autobiographical performance lifts the curtain on the realities of the juvenile legal system while inspiring action toward true justice. The script for this performance was written by Motus Artistic Executive Director Kirsten Wilson based on writings\, conversations\, and reflections of Lorenzo Allen\, Durrel Bumphus\, Lawrence Hershel Goshon\, Raymond Johnson\, Juaquin Mobley\, Michael Rollerson\, and Big Shakur (James Williams). \nMotus Theater facilitates dialogue on critical issues of our time by creating original theater. With Robert B Johnson’s singing and Maisha Diatta’s dancing\, the Dave Fulker Jazz group will celebrate a stellar variety of ground-breaking artists—including Nat King Cole\, Paul McCartney\, Marvin Gaye\, and Beyoncé—whose expressions of freedom continue to hone the American dream! \nDave Fulker: \nOn both flugelhorn and trumpet\, Dave is well known to Boulder audiences for jazz and classical. He led the Centennial Brass Quintet\, and has appeared with Denver Municipal Band\, Boulder Brass\, Colorado Music Festival\, Bob Hope and the Four Tops\, all in addition to a scientific software career at UCAR/NCAR. Dave serves on the CU College of Music Advisory Board and is a Trustee for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra\, in which he played 34 seasons as Principal Trumpet.\nMaisha Diatta: \nPursuing a BFA in dance as a junior at Dean College (in MA)\, Maisha holds competitive awards in many styles—jazz\, modern\, hip-hop and especially tap. Beyond frequent improvisation\, she has created award-winning choreographs for herself and others. Maisha has appeared in Debbie Allen’s Brothers of the Knight\, Chloe Arnold’s #NoFilterSoleTalk\, and the Oscars Academy Concert in LA.\nRobert Johnson: \nRobert has shared the stage with Stevie Wonder\, Roberta Flack\, Lou Rawls\, Blood Sweat and Tears\, Chuck Mangione\, Stan Getz\, Donna Summer\, Robert Cray\, Jeffery Osborne\, Charlie Daniels and Mel Torme. Celebrated for their “primal energy” (Chicago Reader\, March 2025) and hypnotic vocal harmonies\, this quartet blends ethno-ritual performances with feminine resilience for a “dynamic and contemporary” (Minneapolis Star Tribune) experience. \nSince making their North American debut in 2025\, YAGÓDY has continued to evolve their craft\, recently releasing a haunting new single\, “Koni\,” and video from director and cinematographer Olia Klymuk. \nIn this original song inspired by her grandmother\, YAGÓDY founder Zoriana Dybovska sings of “the youth that passes and the love that lives in memories.” The song draws on the image of the willow tree\, a central motif in Ukrainian folklore that acts as an emblem of tenderness\, grief\, and endurance. \nThe three original vocalists of YAGÓDY—Zoriana Dybovska\, Vasylyna Voloshyn\, Tetiana Voitiv\, and accordionist Nadiia Parashchuk—continue their mission to preserve\, reinterpret\, and breathe new life into Ukrainian Ukrainian folk songs and traditions from around the world. YAGÓDY’s repertoire will also include music from their self-titled debut album as well as original singles “Tsunamia\,” which placed in Ukraine’s national Eurovision selection\, and the defiant anthem “BRamaYa.” They will be joined on tour by drummer Teimyraz Gogitidze.

DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJacob Jolliff is one of the world’s premier contemporary mandolinists. In 2011\, he graduated from Berklee College of Music\, having studied there on a full scholarship. The following year\, in 2012\, he won the USA’s National Mandolin Championship in Winfield\, KS. A fixture of the bluegrass scene\, he has performed and collaborated with Béla Fleck\, Tony Trischka\, Michael Daves\, Grant Gordy\, Wes Corbett\, and Alex Hargreaves\, to name a few. Additionally\, throughout his 20s\, he toured as a member of the groups Joy Kills Sorrow and Yonder Mountain String Band. Currently\, his focus is on his own ensemble\, The Jacob Jolliff Band—one of the most cutting-edge progressive bluegrass groups on the scene today. They’ve released three albums\, the most recent of which\, “Instrumentals\, Vol. 2: Mandolin Mysteries\,” dropped in May 2024. The band plays a combination of complex original instrumental music and vocal repertoire that spans from trad bluegrass to unlikely pop covers. Improvisation and the ensemble interplay are at the forefront.

A group of eight theatre-makers has come together to conduct interviews with Colorado-based Gen Z artists (age 18-27) seeking to answer this question and turn those answers into theatre. This performance includes direct quotes\, inspired poetry\, shadow puppetry\, original music\, and creative movement to explore the issues young artists encounter every day. This collective’s goal is to make you\, the audience\, reimagine what a “starving artist” is\, see how much effort art demands from the artist\, understand why artists make art\, and how to “feed” them.

Set on the quayside docks amid the squalor of working-class life in 1820’s England\, the narrative follows a young man as he comes of age in a rough-and-tumble profession\, with music weaving the rich layers of emotional tapestry and humanity. The ensemble includes a narrator and four other musicians\, each a wonderfully eclectic individual steeped in a wide array of musical traditions. Drawing from the musical elements of contrapuntal Bach\, minimalistic Philip Glass\, blues and Irish folk music\, the production creates an experience of story and music that is deeply moving and truly unique.\nThe talented ensemble features narrator Jem Moore\, alongside four exceptional and award-winning musicians: MinTze Wu\, Eric Thorin\, Joy Adams\, and Blayne Chastain.
